CUTV interview

My interview with CUTV (Concordia University TV) is up on their website. Apparently I really move my hands a lot when I speak...
You can watch it here:

(If you watch the whole thing, the Smart Design Mart feature is about 20 minutes in.)

Fine 29!

It's my birthday and I will drink champagne in my jogging pants if I want to.

Another Smart blog mention

Above are a few more shots of my booth from Smart Design Mart taken by Candice Pantin. I found them posted on her amazing blog Montreal in Fashion.

It's not a portrait, I am not a buck and I am not tormented.

As I was hunting away on the internet today, trying to find more pictures taken at Smart Design Mart (a little self-indulgent I know... but whatever) I fell upon this shot, taken by photographer Rosanna Mignacca, posted on flickr. Other than the fact that I kind of look like I am about to slit my wrists in this shot, the image itself is nice, and I appreciate that Rosanna took the time to photograph my work.

What I did not expect, however, was the stream of comments written by other flickr enthusiasts which refer to me as a trophy buck, a tormented artist and a little depressed! (Awesome.) It's a picture people, it was day 3 of Smart, I was tired and I did not know she was taking my picture!!!

Another false assumption made here is the title of the piece: "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Woman" It's actually not a self-portrait of young depressed Natalie. It's not even about depression at all, or me in particular. If you must know it's about the intertwining of consumption and desire and the longing for the type of pleasure that is based solely on the appraisal of one's exterior. (The last sentence was written by MFA Natalie, not blogger Natalie) It's about women wanting to be desired without wanting to be seen as nothing but objects of desire, and struggling to find a balance between the two. It's about that dirty F-word (Feminism!! )
Anyway, if you want to read more comments about my tormented artist self check out the Flickr page here.
Thanks anyway Rosy!

Nightlife: Smart Design Mart photos

I found these great pictures of my paintings at Smart Design Mart on the Nightlife website. Thanks to Simon Gosselin for taking the time to photograph my work!
You can see more photos here.

A few photos of SMART DESIGN MART 2010

Here are a few images of my weekend at Smart Design Mart 2010.

My modest but colourful little booth!

Apparently this is what I look like when I am being interviewed: sitting awkwardly and sticking my tongue out... gorgeous as always!
(Stay tuned for the actual CUTV interview, by what I see here, it promises to be absolutely riveting!)

Parisa's favorite!

A few newer pieces.

Thank you!

It was an exhausting weekend, but I had a great time at Smart Design Mart.
Thank you so much to all of the amazing organizers who were so helpful and supportive, thanks to my family and friends who helped me carry, set up, sell, take down and bring home all of my work and for their encouragement and emotional support, and thank you to all the people who stopped by my booth and said nice things about my work, and to those who took pictures and blogged about me already, you guys are all so kind, it means a lot! (ok this is starting the sound like an Oscar's speech. Time for bed.)

Blissful Wednesday

To make up for my cranky post of last week, I would now like to make a list of the things that have helped me reach my current state of caffeine charged bliss: delicious/cheap Thai food, leaving work early, leaving work early because my lover boy generously lent me his car for the day, daily texting with my BFF which always adds a dash of colour to my otherwise beige cubicle-confined work days, lunching with my fabulous red-headed co-worker as we co-daydreamed about our future art studio, blog spying on all of my talented friends, Al Green who helped me stay cool while I drove in the rain, seeing the first glimpse of my Smart Design Mart booth (which will look good once its filled with art and candy), and last but not least, my hero/mom who drove to Montreal just to help me carry my booth furniture in the rain and is now driving home in the wet gross snowy rain and does not even hate me for it. (thanks again mom)
