SR x NF present a Summer Collaboration
In another lifetime, Michelle Maynard and Natalie Finkelstein spent their 9 to 5 working for the man; the same man actually. Since then, both have set off on their own, Michelle with her chic, Eco-conscious women's label Simone's Rose, and Natalie who explores her sartorial ambivalence through the creation of paintings, illustrations and videos under the name natfink. Both women have now merged their talents into an exciting collaboration that will be launching in June 2012. Until then, the above video is a sneak peak of what is to come.

Happy Valentine's Day
I know it's a stupid day invented by greeting cards companies or whatever, and it's stupid to need a day to celebrate love and bla bla bla... but I really like those little red candies.

BTS 2012
In one week I will be going back to school to present all of the nutty work I did over the last 6 months. Let's just hope that my mom is not the only one who likes my art.

Supportive Indignation
A dear friend said this to me yesterday. I thought it was such a great sentence and an amazing compliment that I made a drawing about it to thank him.

It's stupid how much I miss you
Sometimes I wonder if it would be better for us to just stay stupid together rather than try to get smart apart.

I haven’t got a stitch to wear.
One day I decided to photograph my entire wardrobe. Initially, I thought it would be a good way to weed out the worn and superfluous pieces, leaving me with more breathing room in my over-stuffed closet. The entire shoot took me eight hours - a full workday. By the end, I got rid of only two articles of clothing. The entire process was harder and longer than I had anticipated. Memories, friendships, places, sounds, workdays, trips, love - so many emotions are woven into my ever-growing wardrobe, making it hard to let go of not only of the objects themselves, but of what they represent. This video is more than a comment on consumer culture and the persuasive effects of the fashion industry. Instead, tokens of my memories and manifestations of my personal identity have been put on display, like a bodiless self-portrait. Oddly enough, 421 pieces of me later, I still haven’t got a stitch to wear.

It's the final countdown...
I'm off to school soon and have a million things left to do... but all I really feel like doing right now is drawing silly things.

I would rather be in Berlin
As I sat in my beige cubicle this week, I couldn't help but think to myself: I would rather be in Berlin with my beloved.

I would rather be at the beach.
While many of my friends are off to Mexico and the US of A enjoying the beaches, or surfing in California and getting awesome bad-ass looking black eyes, I am stuck in a beige over-air conditioned cubicle, working like a mad woman on a back-to-school campaign from hell. Does this make me bitter and slightly depressed? Yes, yes it does.

Doodling at RDV DESIGN

Make avatar
I just spent the day at the RDV DESIGN conference in Montreal. The event was amazing and insanely inspiring. I was particularly blown away by Pum and Jake Lefebure of Design Army, who gave a beautiful presentation of their mind blowing work. I adore their motto: "Dream big and smart small." I was also thrilled to have the opportunity to hear the amazing Paula Scher, of New York's Pentagram Design, speak about her work and her creative process.
Another highlight of this conference, organized by Infopresse, was the fabulous notepads they were handing out... As a compulsive doodler, the large blank pages made me blissfully happy and kept my hands busy while I listened. Above are a few of my doodles of the day.

Shoes for the blindly optimistic!
Every day is Valentine's day (shoes for the blindly optimistic) from natfink on Vimeo.
A few weeks ago I was asked to take part in “STYLE YOUR SOLE à MONTRÉAL!” an event put together by the lovely Émilie Frenette and Kim-Mai Lam in collaboration with TOMS shoes. The event is taking place on Saturday, May 14th from 12:00pm - 5:00pm on Émery Street in Montreal. Six other artists and myself will be embellishing shoes all day, and its all for a good cause!Above is a video of the shoes I created, as well as a quick picture of the end product. These little bad boys are going to be auctioned off at the event. I call them: "Every day is Valentine's Day (Shoes for the blindly optimistic)" So if you feel like you need a little love in your step, come and party with us on May 14th!

Today I will blame everything on the weather.
This morning when I left the house, it was raining little pieces of cold ice... This is not a good way to start one's day. Above is a drawing of my mood... below is kind of the reason why.Apr 10, 2011
This is pretty much my artist statement right here...
“The mainstream was like that first girlfriend that dumped me really hard, and I’ve never forgotten her. It’s really embarrassing to admit, but it’s kind of true. And I think that’s why my work often relates to it. Even if I’m like poking at it or fucking with it, it’s because I’m still in love with her and hate her. I feel jilted, you know?”

Bursting at the Seams
Bursting at the Seams from natfink on Vimeo.
Here is my latest piece called Bursting at the Seams. This video began as a series of conversations, once crucial to my survival in an oppressive work environment. The job was to make cheap garments look valuable and enticing through the use of prints, embellishments and packaging. Though it was a creative task, my artistic expression was continuously bombarded with abusive patriarchal ideology not only from within our office, but from the fashion industry itself. At the low price-point fashion level, days are spent chasing trends rather than creating them. Each piece represents a guessing game as to whether our own instincts and desires are reflective of those of the masses. This process makes it easy to end up following behind the heard of sheep that were once the target market. Suddenly the season’s latest jeans become a necessity and the bar for beauty is always just slightly out of reach. Employers, like the industry, feed on the insecurities they helped create. In return, we keep spending and the cycle keeps turning. Is it really love that draws us to lush fabric and sleek styling, or are we just chasing the next season and its promise for more beauty? Maybe it is love, but who is wearing the pants in this relationship?
The conversation in Bursting at the Seams took place during an informal social gathering, over canapés and wine. The women speaking are each veterans of Montreal’s sportswear fashion industry. While I begin in the piece, the editing process was my way of stepping out of the conversation, taking it apart, then putting it back together again, leaving behind the traces of my struggle. This video is reflective of my questions, anger and vulnerability as I try to negotiate a place for myself somewhere between feminism and femininity.

Here is the cover page for an academic paper I recently wrote comparing Liz Lee from MTV's show My Life as Liz to Bella Swan from Twilight.
